On tour with the Northeast Fisheries Science Center

We hit the ground running this spring, getting ready for a video series showcasing the awesome work happening at the Northeast Fisheries Science Center. This NOAA-administered facility is actually a network of five labs, located from Maine to New Jersey. The nation’s first marine fisheries lab was actually founded in our hometown of Woods Hole, MA, 150 years ago!

At the end of May, we took a whirlwind tour from Woods Hole to Narragansett, RI (stopping in the fishing port of Pt. Judith), Milford, CT and Sandy Hook, NJ. We were so impressed with all the researchers we met. They’re truly dedicated to understanding fisheries and how to maximize the economic and nutritional benefits while protecting the marine ecosystem. A tricky, constantly-evolving task!

We’ll be editing all this summer, so rather than tell you everything here, stay tuned for a video showcasing the Center this September! We’ll follow up with a video about the NEFSC Surveys (some of the longest-running fisheries surveys in the world), the Milford lab (which specializes in shellfish aquaculture), and some neat stories about collaborative research and innovative gear modifications to protect endangered sea turtles and the North Atlantic right whale. Whew! We’ll be ready for Labor Day!
