In coastal communities across the country, shellfish aquaculture is more than just a sustainable source of seafood and local jobs. Oyster, mussel, and scallop farms can contribute to good water quality, and aquaculture gear can provide habitat for wild fish. Scientists call these types of benefits “ecosystem services” – but you might know them as nice beaches, fresh local seafood, and interesting careers working on the water!
Dive into this video we produced for NOAA’s Northeast Fisheries Science Center to see how oysters filter water in a matter of hours– and how the town of Greenwich, CT put that powerful ecosystem service to work to improve its water quality!
