Discovery Channel’s SharkWeek is pretty much the Oscars of shark television. While most of the programming is adrenaline-filled and sensationalist, there are some exceptions that focus on actual discovery.
To give some context to SharkWeek, we had the opportunity to go behind the scenes of “Jaws of the Deep”, a show featuring engineers from Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution on a quest to film great white sharks in Guadelupe, Mexico.
Using advanced underwater technology, the scientists captured incredible footage of sharks swimming deeper than ever before… and possibly sleeping! This knowledge will help them understand shark behavior and lead to better protections for these beautiful fish. But when the sharks’ habitat proves to be too much for the vehicle, that’s when the engineers really learned their lesson!
