If you’ve been following our work for a while (or bump into us at a cocktail party), you’ll soon find out that a driving passion is eliminating the concept of “waste.” Though the idea of a “circular economy” is starting to become more mainstream, a huge hurdle is getting people to think about something they do multiple times a day. We’d rather flush and forget, but the “wastewater” we create is actual chock-full of nutrients that could be repurposed into fertilizer. Composting toilets can help us do that safely and without much effort.
Though our documentary on this issue, Nature Calls, is on the back-burner, we were thrilled to work with Conrad Geyser, an eco-toilet pioneer and owner of Cotuit Solar, on a video to bring composting toilets out of the closet. This testimonial video features two Cape Cod couples who tell the story of how they ended up with a composting toilet in their bathroom. Despite what you might think, they’re less odorous, require less maintenance, and are definitely less polluting than your flush toilet! To quickly explain the nutrient problem, we used animation from our short documentary The Watershed, produced by Jeremy Mayhew.
