In August 2018, our DP Daniel Cojanu joined a 3-week research cruise in an eastern Greenlandic fjord. The mission? To track and sample icebergs using satellite tags, innovative remotely operated vehicles, and even drones. This research will help scientists understand what happens to melting glaciers after icebergs break off of them. How quickly do the icebergs melt, and is it happening faster underwater than at the surface? Where does that meltwater go?

The questions are simple, but meltwater is complex. Scientists from the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, Scripps Institute of Oceanography, and the University of Oregon are working on analyzing the data. In the meantime, we produced a short profile about Claudia Cenedese, a physical oceanographer at WHOI who usually models ocean dynamics in her lab and on her computer. Things were a little harder to control aboard the icebreaker, but way more inspiring!

Published in December 2019, this video quickly became one of the Top 10 watched videos on WHOI’s YouTube channel.

Funding for this video and research was provided by the National Science Foundation grant OCE-1658079.
