We had a blast at Boston Ocean Day, the first event of its kind in our oceanfront state capital! As part of a three-day forum on ocean exploration, this free, day-long event featured talks and films at the IMAX theater at the New England Aquarium. The highlight (for us) was seeing a short video we created for the Ocean RobotCam team at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution projected onto the huuuuuge IMAX screen!
The footage was pretty familiar to us, since we’d produced previous videos on SharkCam and TurtleCam. But in this video, a dramatic score by Tudor Maier and breathtaking images taken right alongside the animal creates a truly immersive experience.
WHOI engineer Amy Kukulya used the video to introduce her talk on the autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) made famous on Discovery’s SharkWeek known as SharkCam, while NEAQ/WHOI biologist Kara Dodge gave her take on how the vehicle allowed her to make observations of endangered leatherback turtle behavior from the animal’s perspective — not just what the animal was doing, but why it matters.
We hope you enjoy this incredible animal POV, and consider supporting Project TurtleCam so this vital research continues.
