Bora Yoon and the NYC Polyphony

This month, we filmed experimental musician Bora Yoon’s performance in Woods Hole with the New York City Polyphony.  A multi-instrumentalist, composer and performer, Bora creates a type of performance art that is part radio Foley, part sound design, and part gesture—exploring where sound connects to the subliminal and its performance environment through the timbres of the human voice, viola, water, Tibetan singing bowls, radios, cell phones, metronomes, music boxes, glockenspiel, guitar, found sounds, custom-built instruments, electronics, antiquated audio technology, and venue acoustics.

Using a sound designer’s approach to performance composition that is steered by a penchant for a song, she creates music that plays with sensory associations and spatial idiosyncrasies, with much little regard for the classifying genres of instrumentation. We hope our video will convey the spontaneity and inspiration for this house concert, a benefit for the purchase of new bells for Saint Joseph’s Church in Woods Hole.
